This month has been a crazy one, so I thought I would do a roundup of all the bits and pieces.
Firstly, I started working for Profane magazine, as a slush reader. I'm one month in, and the job has been incredibly hard - especially when you take a day off from it because of tiredness or being double-booked, knowing that you've just doubled your workload for the next day - and incredibly rewarding. I've already read some amazing work, and I can feel it honing my critical reading skills. I've always been taught to give reasons for my opinions, ever since college, but this is a whole other level - trying to work out exactly why something precise like sentence structure is putting me off, or technical reasons why characters feel fleshed out and realised, rather than author inserts. I'm really lucky to have been given the chance to read slush for a magazine like Profane, especially since, from my research, a lot of such jobs go to graduates. I'm having a great time, and learning so much as I go about writing - and reading for critique, as well as review.
Speaking of review, Unnerving Issue 2 came out this month, and it featured THREE pieces of content from myself; two reviews, and an interview. I am so, so lucky to be working with Unnerving, and I gushed about that here. I've really fallen in love with reviewing, and I want to pursue it further - and to be able to do that in my preferred genre? To be able to see the most exciting stuff on the indie publishing scene, and get the books for free?! How amazing is that!
The big thing for this month, however, was Clockwork Magpies getting longlisted for the Bath Flash Fiction Novella in Flash award. I was disappointed not to get on to the shortlist...but as time has passed, I realised that the collection isn't done. There are still characters who need their own stories (including my favourite ice queen, Odessa Malko - soon to be starring in a story published by Mad Scientist Journal), scenes and people and places still left to visit. So, through April, as well as attempting to do NaPoWriMo, I am going to be tinkering with my manuscript...before starting the process of sending it to publishers. Eep!!
And that's where I am tonight! Come back tomorrow for Short Story Sunday - and happy April!
